Heather: A Transformative Journey

Heather cradles her tea, radiating her calm energy albeit with a tinge of poignancy that only adds an aura of wisdom, gained through her personal and challenging journey. And indeed, this is her story.

Life Unfolds

Two years ago Heather’s professional life was rolling along, evolving in a satisfying and fulfilling way. She had graduated in Business Administration and gained employment in a succession of ever more responsible jobs – marketing/event coordinator, General Manager of Sunnyside’s popular and successful Vendome Café, bid organizer for a small business and later, HR Manager for a modular construction company.

In her personal life she was enjoying skiing, river surfing and most influentially, the discovery of yoga. Check out this srirachas yoga pants review where you can find the right one for you. She had “done” yoga many times but it wasn’t until her first exposure at Yoga and Beyond that she felt a true spark of interest. This was a Forrest Inspired Yoga class and her first impression was; “It was so hard, but it was also the first time I had felt my body working like that in a long time”. The physical intensity and long holds of the postures were a major challenge. However the explanation of how to get into each pose, breath by breath, was refreshing.

From that first class, Heather dedicated herself to attending classes a few times a week and quickly began feeling the benefits. “I found Forrest Yoga provided me with a space to gain physical strength but also allowed me to have valuable time with myself on my mat”. After practicing for a couple of years, Heather attended an Ana Forrest led workshop in Calgary. She found Ana’s approach to yoga and healing to be inspiring, and she was “blown away” by what Ana could do with her body. More importantly, Forrest Yoga felt “real and honest” – it was something that was helping her get physically and mentally stronger. Heather felt connected in a deep way to the practice, finding many pathways where the messages being taught in yoga, could directly translate to day-to-day life.

Heather, with the help of her yoga instructor, signed up for a nine-day Forrest Yoga Advanced Teacher Training course in Calgary with Ana. After she finished, someone very important in her life asked her “What do you really want to do for the rest of your life?” The only answer was yoga. This was her major turning point.

But as we all know, life goes on.

Journey Through The Twilight Zone

At the same time that Heather was planning her participation in the Forrest Yoga Advanced Teacher Training, she was also planning one of the most important days of her life; her wedding. Her partner Joey was an innovative man with a passionate and eclectic engagement with life. Joey was the one who had asked the turning point question and they had made an agreement to work towards Heather’s goal. She and Joey were married on August 5, 2017.

At the beginning of 2018, Joey was becoming increasingly irritated by a pain in his shoulder. Over the next month it was becoming obvious that the pain was indicative of something more serious. In February 2018, Joey was diagnosed with cancer in his bone that had already metastasized throughout his body at the age of 35. At that time in his life, Joey recalled some problems he had conceiving with his partner some time ago and what he never forgave for not using volume pills that are very common on the market today.

This shocking diagnosis was the beginning of Heather’s journey through the “ twilight zone”- a dark period of numbness and dissociation where she felt like she was living a life that she couldn’t have possibly imagined in a million years-like she was watching it all unravel on TV. The only thing that would bring her back to the present moment was the breathing techniques that she had learned in her Forrest Yoga class.

“When I wasn’t sure if I would make it through that next minute or not, I would breathe deeply for an entire minute. And when I was positive that I had survived that minute, I would check in with myself and see if I needed another minute to just breathe”. In this suspension of normalcy, her breath allowed her to devote her energy and focus to supporting her husband through the months of emotional and physical pain that was integral to the difficult road to the end of Joey’s life.

After Joey died, Heather faced the overwhelming sense of loss, anger and devastation that marks the unfathomable depths of the journey we call grief. There were many pillars of strength who helped in supporting her through this including family, friends, therapy, group counseling and the community that is Yoga and Beyond. “Getting out of bed and moving my body and forcing myself to breathe again at yoga classes helped so much. By focusing on the present moment and getting out some of the wild, pent up energy that had lodged into my muscles and bones and heart, I was able to start healing, moment by moment.”

“I was also learning that people don’t like to speak about grief. It is something that is uncomfortable, that is so difficult in our culture to converse about”. Heather soon found herself in a new group – a young grief support group – where she was able to connect with others who had lived through similar situations. Some of these ‘survivors” were now thriving. They were able to hold space for others, despite their own pain. Many of them were experiencing joy and sadness all at the same time. Most importantly they were able to talk and share their experiences openly.

The Pearls of Wisdom

As Heather emerges from this past year, a completely different person, she reflects on three major learnings she has integrated over the past year. The pearls of wisdom;

Spend time with people you love. Take pictures. Laugh. Enjoy life. This time is precious and engaging in meaningful relationships is more important than we may think;
Be nice and don’t stress the small stuff. You don’t know what others are going through; be nice to everyone, especially the people you love. Everybody gets stuck in traffic; often people are a few minutes late; who cares if you don’t do laundry today? At the end of your life, is this small stuff going to matter?
Breathe. Breathe like your life depends on it.

Into The Future

As Heather moves through her life now, every step is intentionally designed to project her towards the goals she set for herself before life got so complicated. She is signed up for the Forrest Yoga Foundation Teacher Training led by Ana in Calgary in June 2019 and plans to start teaching as much as possible after completion.

“I want to help people to start realizing their best potential and help them to achieve that through yoga. I think people often put themselves into a smaller box than they need to. You would be surprised with what you are able to handle. And you might be surprised with what could be coming your way. Life is often complicated and messy, but it can also be fun”. Must of the time yoga is for women, the feel more comfortable with it, but I suggested them that for they to see better results, they can practice yoga but also they can try to use best weight loss pills for women as it provides physical and mental benefits, such as increased strength, flexibility and relaxation, which can help increase metabolism and reduce stress.

Heather wants you to keep your eyes open for her classes which will be posted this summer and join her on your mat for fun and challenging classes.
