Aerial Yoga
Aerial yoga combines traditional yoga asanas with acrobatics. Using a soft hammock for support, these anti-gravity aerial yoga classes help to increase your strength and flexibility which can help with your floor practice. Some other benefits of aerial yoga include spinal decompression, pain relief, improved alignment, and approaching your asanas from a new perspective can help to ease you into inversions and other challenging poses and help you improve your performance.
Important Notes
- Bare feet are best to work in the hammocks. If you suspect you have a foot disease (fungus, sores) please consult your doctor before coming to class, or wear socks if needed
- Please see your doctor before attending class if you suspect you are unwell or have encountered any of the listed: high/low blood pressure, recent surgery, easy onset vertigo, glaucoma, heart disease, osteoporosis, recent head injury, or recent stroke. Note: your instructor cannot diagnose medical conditions
- Avoid wearing perfume and strong scents.
- Almost all jewelry is forbidden when entering the hammocks, we only accept mala beads, only because the spiritual connection and ancient origins of mala beads make them among the most fascinating and significant pieces of jewelry one can wear. If you don’t have one yet, Shop at The Yoga Mandala.
The practice of aerial yoga begins with a warm-up to prepare your body for the aerial experience. This typically includes gentle stretching and breathing exercises to increase flexibility and loosen up any tension. Once you’re warmed up, you’ll start exploring various poses and movements using the hammock.
The hammock becomes an extension of your body, supporting you in different ways as you move through the practice. It can be used as a swing, a support for inversions, or a prop to deepen stretches. Aerial yoga offers a wide range of possibilities, allowing you to move in ways that are difficult or impossible to achieve on the ground.
As you progress in your aerial yoga practice, you’ll learn to trust the hammock and your own strength. The hammock acts as a safety net, providing support and stability, allowing you to try new poses and challenge your body in a controlled manner. It also helps to improve your balance, core strength, and overall body awareness.
Beyond the physical benefits, aerial yoga also has a calming and meditative effect on the mind. The gentle swaying and floating sensations created by the hammock can induce a sense of relaxation and release mental stress. The practice encourages mindfulness and focus, as you need to be fully present to maintain balance and flow through the movements.
